A solid groove is the foundation upon which all great music and musicians rest. When a drummer finds that groove, they support the other musicians playing, allowing them to relax and follow the groove while they layer their rhythms and melodies over the top. Knowing how to find and feel your groove as a drummer is everything!
Where can you learn drums in Geelong?
If you are interested in learning to drum, or taking your drum skills to another level, Take5 Music can offer lessons in drums, congas, djembe and percussion.
You'll learn the basis of keeping time, rhythms, rudiments, fills and reading drum-kit notation. You will play together with and in response to your teacher on side-by-side kits in the Drum Room, allowing you to establish good solid time and to hear and imitate rhythms as you practice your rudiments and play songs. As you progress, you'll get the chance to apply your skills alongside guitar or bass in the Band Room.
Theory is an integral part of learning music and becoming a musician, but Pino teaches theory by integrating it with your playing. Key concepts will be gradually introduced as you learn to keep it interesting and relevant to you.
If you are more experienced on drums, we will assess your skills and work on strengthening any gaps in your technique and theory. You'll be encouraged and challenged to improve your time, rudiments and reading skills, but also to develop your musicianship and sensitivity as a drummer. We can also help you to develop your performance and songwriting skills.
Drumming lessons are available for all ages. Contact us to discuss your individual goals and needs.
Learning drums FAQs
What is the best age to start learning drums?
Age is no barrier to starting drums - we've even had students as young as 3 and lots of people fulfil a dream by taking up drums when they are older or in retirement. It’s great fun at any age and great exercise for brain development and memory.
Do I need a drum kit to start learning drums?
No, you can start before you have a kit as you can practice your rudiments and technique with a set of sticks and a practice pad or cushion.
What is the best type of drum kit to buy?
There is no single answer to this question… it really depends on you, your space and your budget! At Take5 Music, you’ll learn on an acoustic kit - there is nothing quite like that feeling - but many people buy electronic kits and headphones for practicality and to keep parents and neighbours happy. A good quality secondhand kit can be great value. Pino will be happy to guide you if you are looking at buying a kit once you’ve started learning.
Why should I learn drums with a teacher?
There’s nothing stopping you from learning by yourself - many people do - but there are advantages to learning with an experienced drum teacher. You’ll be guided in stages by someone who understands the bigger picture of drum theory and practice, and you’ll start out developing good technique and solid foundations of time and groove. Learning with a teacher can help you get where you want to go faster, with genuine feedback that helps you to correct technique and grow skills.
